Chapter 5!!
What is the cover story, Rudolfo and the Duchessa create for Lucien?
'He was Luciano, a young cousin of Rodolfo's from Padavia, who had come to be his apprentice.

In point form list everything that Lucien learns about his ability to stravagate from one world to another.

  • He must be touching the book to Stravagate.
  • He can only get to Bellezza if he is asleep in his own world.
  • It is always night in his world when it is day in Bellezza.
  • He mustn't take things between worlds.

Explain the differences that Lucien notices between Bellezza and his own world.

  • The boats are called Mandolas not Gondolas.
  • Silver was valued a lot more than gold.
  • Gold tarnishes not silver.

Read page 89 thoroughly and explain the signifance of the manus fortunae.
The 'Manus Fortunae' mean the hand of fortune. It also means 'may the lady goddess, her king consort and her son aid us, may the circle of our life be unbroken'. It was a superstitious hand gesture like touching wood. 

Chapter 6!!

List everything that is revealed about William Dethridge and his role in Stravagation.
His name is William Dethridge and he was born on 20th April 1523 in Barnsbury and died in 1575 at an age of 52 years old. He was educated at Oxford and Bologna. he was English and studied in Italy. He was an astrologer an alchemist. He was condemned to death by Elizabeth I in 1575 but disappeared before he was executed. Several times he woke up in his coffin.

Who is Giuliana and what dangerous information does she reveal to her fiance?
Giuliana is the substitute for the Duchessa on special occasions and she gets paid large amounts of money and silver for lending the Duchessa her body. She revealed to Enrico that she was the Substitute and no one knows this so Enrico tells people.

Chapter 7!!

Explain the story behind the tradition of wearing masks in Bellezza.
The Glass Master had made this specific mask that suited the Duchessa's desires for her to wear to the Carnival. She wore it to the Great ball and while she was dancing with her partner, Ferrando di Chimici, she tripped and fell. She wore a mask to cover her face at every public occasion and no one ever saw her face ever again. She made it a law that every girl over 16 that wasn't married had to wear a mask too so she had no rivals.
